Here are some really great pictures of my face!!
My friend Jakob posted this on his blog and I thought it was pretty amazing.
Got this email yesterday:
Sorry in advance, but it must be said.
Why must 1/3 of your tumblr posts feature your face? Are you that self involved that you are unaware that THAT is really the most unattractive, ie douche-bag quality, feature of web life 2.0?
You diminish the value of your own stock. Perhaps that will go down as your poetic flaw…
do you think your own private idaho, steve jobs would be looking
for excuses to post photos of himself? Just leave *your face* out of your posts. that’s all.
Like your mary moustache stunt…it’s just another excuse to upload your lame mug. boring.
I realize this isn’t your grandfather talking, but rather your concerned community. Your very own life focus group.
get ovr yr slf.
enjoy yr othr posts though! I just wish I didn’t have to cringe from every 3rd post you make after being genuinely intrigued by the two prior.
all in fun.My reply:
I’m just doing my part to make the world a more beautiful place.
Let me explain. The attractiveness of a person is tied directly to their self esteem. People dress the part. A man who thinks he is a piece of shit will wear shitty clothing, adopt poor posture, and nervously dart his eyes around any room he walks into.
Humans are not pieces of shit, by nature — though some think they are, and act accordingly. Humans are superior to all animals, to the earth itself, to superstitions, to traditions, to the state — to everything. We just don’t all know it, yet.
By posting pictures of myself, I am also broadcasting the message, “It’s ok to be photographed even if you are not a model.” This may subtly influence people to post their own pictures; as a result, they will become more aware of their own image. As a result of that, they may learn to accept their unique physical traits as just that — unique traits — instead of flaws to be hidden.
Covering up freckles with make-up or arching your neck forward to stretch a double chin does not actually change your body. It simply creates a new complication on top of the old one, by way of dishonesty. Adding complexity to a system is a technique for creating, not solving, problems.
I love the writer’s comment that this may go down as my “poetic flaw”, though… imagining some biography of my life. “He achieved great things, but all was overshadowed by his frequent self-photos.”
