Nicholas Scimeca is an influential designer and tastemaker with a keen eye for fashion, architecture, art and culture. As the Creative Director of the Chicago-based agency WE CAN’T STOP THINKING, Scimeca has worked with companies like Patagonia, Fjallraven and Warner Bros. I love documentaries. Netflix Instant is one of my favorite inventions because it gives me (and you) instant access to tons of awesome films. I am constantly looking for new releases and asking friends for recommendations. So…I made a list of my favorite documentaries that are available on Netflix Instant. Before we ran thru the tunnel

We all met at this rad event space in old town. Shoutout to Nike for the free valet, very necessary. They gave us a quick presentation on the technology, research & concept of FuelBand. Learning about the FuelBand made me 10x more excited than I was before the event and at this point in the night it was hard to pay attention because everyone was whispering, hoping and daydreaming that they were going to get their own FuelBand. Guilty. After the presentation, Cindy rolled on stage and told us that they were taking us to Soldier Field for some fun and surprises. Everyone was stoked. I got chills. Being from Chicago, there’s so much history there. We got fitted for our FuelBands, set our goal to 1000 and started our trek.

Our glossy black SUV’s strolled into the underground parking garage and the first thing I saw was Staley (the mascot) and the tunnel that led onto the field. It was fucking awesome. We went into the locker rooms. Robbie Gould strolled out and gave a nice little talk about what we were getting into. We lined up alphabetically and waited to run through the tunnel. At this point, a bunch of the Nike staff was walking around and they stopped and nerded out over the new shoes that Nike gave me. After they were done gawking and taking photos, they broke it to me that they had never even seen them before as they don’t even come out until April. (Pretty fucking dope of Nike to send some shoes that aren’t even out yet. Thanks!!!)

Before I could even wrap my head around what was about to happen, we were running through the tunnel while our names were being announced over the stadium speakers. Everyone was geeking out and no one was too cool for it. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and everyone was taking full advantage. After running out onto the field they set up 3 stations. One for field goals, one for catching passes and one for drills. My team was up for Field Goals. I was super nervous. De’Mar and I contemplated if we should even try to do it. Everyone got their shot at a field goal with pointers from Robbie. I won’t embarrass De’Mar and William with the outcome of their kicks :) - but Johnny and I (somehow) nailed it. Very unexpected. Very awesome.

After catching and dropping passes (I dropped 1. William caught both of his.) and attempting to do fancy foot drills, we piled back into our SUV’s and headed back to the event space. Everyone on our team made our NikeFuel goal of 1000. Jaco, our team leader was stoked. Once we got back to the space, all of the girls took part in the high end dance class, all of the boys huddled in the corner like we were at an 8th grade dance. All in all, an amazing event by Nike. Thanks so much for the invite. It was truly an amazing experience and I cannot wait to start using my Nike FuelBand. #makeitcount

My friend Joel did it again. It seems like my San Diego friends have the most fun. This time they hiked a couple miles into the Big Laguna Trail with a bunch of friends and played a show. I am so jealous that I don’t have access to anything like this here in Chicago. Check out the video for an awesome song and be prepared to be jealous that you weren’t there. Unless you were there…(Kenny).

Check out this clip from my friend Jon’s documentary. Jon is raising funds on Kickstarter and he is currently at $42,521 of the $55,000 goal. Check it out on Kickstarter.

Dust Radio, a documentary film about legendary bluesman Chris Whitley, whose brilliant career spanned several decades before he died, broke and widely forgotten about, in 2005. This project brings together two filmmakers with unique perspectives and a lifetime of combined footage about the same man, once on the meteoric rise to megastardom, estranged and destitute at the end of his life. A story that shows Chris for who he was, in all his brilliance and anguish, all of his seeking and longing to communicate and be heard.

I’ve been digging this dudes record for the past few months. It’s kind of Sigur Ros ish but with an electronic element that Sigur Ros doesn’t really mess with. That whole style of music is probably my favorite genre. For whatever reason I’ve always been drawn to sad sounding music. I truly wish I could have been in that room with them while they were playing this.

I asked my girlfriend about this crazy image I saw on her desktop. (above)

She said “These are mesenchymal stem cells that have gone through a differentiation process to change them into adipocytes, or fat cells. The red is a stain called Oil Red O that is used to confirm that the cells, in fact, have differentiated into adipocytes.”

So basically, the red bubbles are fat. Isn’t it weird that they look exactly like you would imagine them to?
